#54 A Glamping We Will Go

Another item crossed off my 64 things to do before I am 64 list and one I didn`t think I`d persuade Sue to do - a glamping trip!  Neither of us quite take to the caravan / camping life but I wanted to try it once. Granted I got Sue along by buying first, asking later but when I saw a 2 night stay in a Gypsy caravan on Groupon I thought "Why not?". For £69 we couldn`t go wrong and the site sounded interesting -
North Shire  a real hobbit shire in the heart of Yorkshire. The only snag was no en suite facilities and a trek to the shower block in the night- could we survive?
To ease our way in the first day was taken up with a trip to Whitby just 15 minutes down the road from the site. One of our favourite coastal resorts it`s always worth a visit and despite forecasts the weather was fantastic! Once more we took the sun with us wherever we went these few days.
We wanted to sit down so had to be Quayside as The Magpie is only open for takeaways

Then it was on to Sandsend - always a favourite!

Never noticed the fine view of Whitby Abbey from Sandsend beach before.

Then it was on to North Shire and our Romany experience. Sue had been practising her palm reading and I had been readying my quotes for tarmacking and garden works so we were all prepared. I even had my penknife with me in readiness for a final resolution to deals struck. This had been taught to me by a traveller who did our early landscaping on our then new house. A good enough job for the price ultimately but had to get him back a few times before I was happy. The last occasion i got him back he gently scraped his two / three day stubble with a large penknife as he told me why he would not be back again. Together with binning his PAYG mobile phone this enabled a final resolution to our transaction.
The gypsy caravan was small and enchanting. Small double bed, one burner and kettle / 2 mugs and two benches with a disproportionate amount of stage space. At the far end to the shower block and nestled in trees next to the stone circle it looked great. The 7% slope it was on led to a poor nights sleep however!
Slope of 7%
Fairy lights inside

Lovely setting

Shower block

Washing up station but as we had no cooker / pots little use for it

Wash basins in shower hut

A bed nights sleep where we both felt we were rolling out and downhill led to complaints and a free upgrade to a much bigger shepherd`s hut which was lovely.

Much better sleep in a king sized bed with much more room to sit in - if we had not been blessed with lovely weather! Off to Staithes, Saltburn and Robin Hood`s Bay on our 2nd day.

The lovely thing about the North Shire site is the layout and friendly animals

This cat was a regular visitor as was the peacock!

The Hobbit House at North Shire is fantastic for any Tolkien fans. The couple staying there let us look in.

The hill down to Staithes

Loved the woodworkers shop

Saltburn

Woollens on the pier

We were joined by the Doc Martin girls with radio

Then it was off to Robin Hood`s bay

Love the title of this corner - Sunny Place

Nice clock

After a lovely stay in glorious weather we went back to Leeds the quick way which brought the added  bonus of passing by Roseberry Topping which is another place I need to visit.
All in all a lovely trip with glorious weather but we have decided that camping/ glamping whatever is not for us unless we get en suite facilities a step away from our beds!
